The helmet camera flickers as Hale steps through the torn hull of the Ardent Dawn, a fleet vessel that vanished six months earlier without distress signal or debris field. The corridors bend inward like ribs around a throat, the metal reshaped into strange, glistening structures that seem almost alive.

Hale moves deeper inside the wreck, the ship’s old fleet markings still visible beneath the warped surfaces spreading across the hull. Then something moves. A violent crack of tearing metal erupts ahead as the wall splits open. A head bursts through the hull, long, serpentine, neither fully dragon nor alien, its jaws already opening as its eyes lock onto the lone investigator.

The feed collapses into static.

For several seconds the fleet hears nothing but the distant hum of the wreck drifting in space. Then another sound slips into the channel, slow movement somewhere in the dark, wet and deliberate, like something feeding just beyond the reach of the signal.

Hale’s breathing returns to the transmission, softer now, uneven… drawn out in a way that makes the listening crew fall silent.
